Electric
The Highland Electric system has been owned and operated by the City, ensuring reliable electric power, since 1899. The system presently serves 5,257 residential, 572 commercial and 193 industrial users spread out over 64 square miles.
Highland belongs to the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA), a consortium of municipalities that purchases electrical power. In addition, the city owns a power plant that houses nine generators giving Highland its own generating capabilities.
The capacity for Highland’s reliable low cost electricity comes from a dedicated 138KV Transmission line and a new 138/34.5KV substation, which were placed in service in 1999. There are two 34.5 sub-transmission lines and 17 Megawatts of diesel generation that are utilized to provide backup service to the city. Highland’s backup supply ensures maximum power and reliability under all but the most catastrophic situations.
Highland offers competitive electric rates, so you know that you will never be paying too much for your electric power.
