Public Safety is a top priority in Highland. Although Highland, Illinois is included in the St. Louis MSA, it has a drastically lower crime rate when compared to St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville and the U.S.

Crime is rated on a scale from 1 (low crime) to 100 (high crime). Violent crime is composed of for offensive: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
With a state of the art 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) located at the Highland Police Department, you have more efficient and quicker services available. The PSAP handled over 11,000 calls for service last year. The Highland Police Department is staffed with 20 sworn officers and eight support staff, operating 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Highland Police offer numerous programs and services to the public.
Highland Fire Department provides education, suppression functions and emergency medical services to the community. Highland has been reviewed and rated for fire protection by the Insurance Services Organization (ISO) at a class 4 level which is the top 15% in the entire state of Illinois. The Fire Department responded to 154 calls for service last year with only 9 of those classified as actual fires.
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides paramedic level of care for the community and the surrounding area, with a call volume of approximately 3,500 requests for service per year. EMS provides CPR classes to the public and other agencies.
